"Science and the taboo of psi" with Dean Radin

Google Tech Talks January, 16 2008 ABSTRACT Do telepathy, clairvoyance and other "psi" abilities exist? The majority of the general population believes that they do, and yet fewer than one percent of mainstream academic institutions have any faculty known for their interest in these frequently reported experiences. Why is a topic of enduring and widespread interest met with such resounding silence in academia? The answer is not due to a lack of scientific evidence, or even to a lack of scientific interest, but rather involves a taboo. I will discuss the nature of this taboo, some of the empirical evidence and critical responses, and speculate on the implications. Speaker: Dean Radin Dean Radin is a researcher and author in the field of parapsychology. He is Senior Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences and four-time former President of the Parapsychological Association. He holds an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a masters degree in electrical engineering and a doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has worked at AT&T Bell Labs and GTE Labs, mainly on human factors of advanced telecommunications products and services, and held appointments at Princeton University, Edinburgh University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, SRI International, Interval Research Corporation, and Boundary Institute. At these facilities he was engaged in basic research on exceptional human capacities, principally psi phenomena.

Can you provide references by him or your "other scientists" or are we supposed to believe everything you say just because you made the effort to say it?

Btw, that "good point" was directed at momerath, not revo.

Good point.

I think even Dr Hyman acknowledges that "something is going on here", since he, with other scientists, have ruled out other 'fraud, file drawer problem etc' explanations. So the state of the matter right now is to continue to do rigorous tests to find out just 'what' is going on, being careful to say only what is being found out and to not say what isn't being found out.

If you give no detailed explanation of how their experiments are statistically "very questionable", you are just arguing from your own authority. I hope you would not wish people to take your word for it any more than the speaker in this video.

My work requires frequent use of advanced, robust statistical methods. The "experiments" and their design presented in this video are very questionable, although not immediately apparent to someone who doesn't have a very thorough knowledge of statistics and how you can actually get very inconclusive results by designing an experiment improperly.

Awesome! I'm gonna start developing my psychic powers right away. If this talk proves one thing, it's that Google employs a huge number of those annoying kids who are always trying to demonstrate how smart they are in class. These are the sort who think exceedingly fast and shallow, skimming over the surface and soaking all bystanders with their sophomoric spuming.

Dude, if you want to take just one thing away from this, take the following: statistics has DEVILISH complications and is EXTREMELY slippery business. A single man (with a fixation) can NEVER be a source reliable enough when it comes to statistical results - what can and CAN NOT be said on their basis. You get a number of different statisticians to review the data (like dr. Hyman who's dealt with Radin before) and let me know if THEY become convinced there's something there and then I'll listen.

So you don't believe in the scientific method? I suppose you think evolution is false too, and that gravity doesn't exist?
