(cont'd) They had just started playing arenas at the very end of their last tour and were hardly a sure sellout every night. And the highest single they had in the US was Pride at #32, which doesn't exactly scream stadiums. You consider it "goofing around", but to me it shows how Bono could connect with a crowd regardless of its size, making it an intimate experience in the unlikeliest of places and events. Which is the ultimate for stadiums, and something very few performers can pull off.

We're discussing 2 different things here. I've been to Europe a number of times over the years but I'm hardly an expert on their venues. And I don't have a feel for what Europeans were thinking regarding the band in the mid-80s. But I do know how it works in the US. And going from arenas to stadiums is a huge, huge leap. And without Live Aid I don't think they make that leap nearly as soon as they did. (cont'd)

This is the best version all time of this song. Love the guitar riff and Bono wailing "WIDE AWAKE!"

All their shows during the UF tour in 84/85 in Europe were in arenas (from 7.000 up to 15.000), and most of them they played two nights or more. But again, im only saying that its not only cause of Bad (or Live Aid in general). they were already on a big rise. In Holland for instance, they played in 83 for about 3.000 people, in 84 twice for 8.500, and in 87 twice for 50.000 I think the constant airplay of Bloody sunday at red rocks benefited them more than goofing around during Bad.
