Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China
Most roads leading to quake-damaged areas remain severed by landslides. Military helicopters continue to play an important role in saving lives. Quake survivors are hurried by air to Fenghuangshan Airport outside Chengdu.
An ever growing convoy of trucks loaded with relief supplies has been arriving at Fenghuangshan Airport in Chengdu since Wednesday morning. Under the command of the Chengdu military, helicopters were immediately thrown into service, air dropping badly needed supplies in isolated areas. The choppers also serve a dual role, providing life-saving ambulance service to the injured.
" We airdrop foods and other necessities anywhere where the roads are cut. On the return trip we carry out some of the injured", one pilot said.
By noon, most of the helicopters were returning to the airport. The first arrived with ten injured people from Yinxiu town, Wengchuan County.
"I was so happy to see them come. I had thought I was going to die. My wounds were bleeding very badly", one quake survivor said.
Survivors say they started receiving supplies by airdrop Tuesday. But those who remain stranded need more help.
" We had food and other supplies air dropped. Water and electricity were cut off. We all tried to work together to help each other."
Dozens of ambulances and medics from Chengdu hospitals waited outside the airport for the returning helicopters. As each chopper came in, the injured where taken to hospitals as swiftly as possible.
