I hate driving, but I love riding. This is sweet.

I always assumed this song was inspired by Gordon Lightfoot's Canadian Railroad Trilogy. Great song in any case. I had not heard of it before Lyle Lovett covered it on his Step into This House album.

"Drink up while the drinkin' is free, drink up to the cowboy's who're dead or a-dyin', drink to my compadres and me". I haven't heard the album for years, but the visual images are so strong from it. Whew!

Thank you for sharing what is by far the best song ever written about small town central Texas life. Steven is this state's best kept secret. He wrote Texas Trilogy while stationed in San Francisco while in the Navy. He is amazing in person.

I remember listening to this song on KNUS (Dallas station) back in 1970. I lucked into an LP of Frummox a few years later. Got to see Steve Frumholtz live in concert at UTA. My favorite from the album is "Man in the Big Hat."

I went to see Kopperel while stationed at Ft Hood in 1990...the town seemed as bleak then as when Frummox wrote about it 20+ years earlier.....
