I have Asperger's syndrome, part of the Autistic Spectrum. I have participated in Prof. Simon Baron Cohen's studies at the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University, England.
It does sometimes appear however, that individuals are indeed misdiagnosed, probably due to a general lack of awareness within the medical profession and a deficit of neuropsychological specialists.
The children in the film are reacting to a cascade of hyper-sensory stimuli characteristic of ASD.

it's like Beethoven is deaf and Stephen Hawking cannot move anymore. What's lesser in them? it only make them greater, because they have overcome their difficulties.

Well, being autistic is NOT a shame. it's just some people don't understand autism and look down on those people.
Einstein is my life-time hero, and i'm quite comfortable with the suggestion that he is autistic. In fact there are many genius among autistic people, e.g. Daniel Tammet, Stephen Wiltshire.

what a nonsense i hate this video.
autisme doesnt exist its only a label that parents use if they cant handle their children.
their is no proof of autisme anywhere
only in the holy bible of DSM

i have saw loads of programmes about autism, aspergers, savants etc etc etc and have saw that documentary.
to me the problem with this debate is its giving the impression that all talent, creativity is directly related to this condition called "autism" and also that "out of the ordinary" thinking is "diseased","abnormal" at the same time.
this thinking gives rise to comments like this: autistics have a low vocabulary, women have large vocabulary. conclusion, all men are autistic.

actually unfortunately enough they are starting to use the words "mentally retarded" in text books again (I don't agree with it though)

Watch "The Woman who Thinks Like a Cow" here on Youtube - This lady alone proves you wrong. She changed the way most of American slaughter houses are set up for the better because of her creativity and skill. I'm also kind of confused as to where feminist women came into the discussion when it's clearly about autism...

I know what that's like. (I kind of responded wrong mine should have been under the guy who said "I have AS and I am a comedian".)
I just think our condition just makes us see beyond the boxes that most neurotypical people like to stay in. For me it's all about group identities, and my personal interest. Basically I am the opposite of the person who likes Rap, R&B, but eschews Country, or House without giving it a listen. (because the last two are associated with certain groups.) |
