My coach would never let me step behind

I agree. At anytime if you cross your feet, you will fall flat on your face or deliver a very awkard ball to the first baseman. I would love to know where he played baseball...lol.

hey guy, you have no idea how to field a baseball. just to let you know...6 f's: feet, field, funnel, feet, fire, follow...look it up - which professional player has anyone seen field a ball to the left by their foot...and which player crosses their feet when moving to first? msg me if you want to learn how to really field

actually you must teach kids at a young age. they gotta learn to field a ground ball this way especially kids! they are not very strong at all do rounding the ball would give them the momentum they need to throw to first and would get it going towards first. they emphasize rounding the ball in high school, division 1 college baseball, and the pros!

Whats a forced play?

someone on the internet is wrong, and that someone is you!
your "round the ball" idea is not a good one... you're teaching kids to field the ball on the move. and "maybe" step behind? boil down the mechanics, dude. charge the ball, set. field it cleanly with an inward motion towards your torso (which you neglected to explain), and SET before you throw. you gotta teach kids to charge the ball and field it cleanly.
and what about backhands? shortstops must know how to use the backhand.

You step step behind, not infront, unless you wish to trip.
