In the opera "I Puritani," Elvira goes nuts in all three acts. I know that's not the same as dying half-way through, but I'm just saying.

Well - she dies - but she does dance in the second act - so not really comparable to dramatic pieces where the character stays in the grave!

I saw Giselle tonight in Honolulu and want to post this question for comment, from anyone with an interest in the theater: "How many other dramatic pieces can you think of, besides Giselle, where the title character dies halfway in to the piece?" Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar" comes to mind. Are there any others?

Yes, an interesting deal where the disguised nobleman is a nice guy. Rossini's 'Barber of Seville' presents a similar situation in a comic format. That said, we in the 21st century, and those playwrights and librettists of the 19th century, must have known that noblemen would rarely treat peasant women with such respect. The Duke of Mantua using the disguise of a working class guy to seduce Gilda in Verdi's 'Rigoletto' is probably way closer to "how it really happened" (then and now).

DisneyFanFreak14: No. ;D He's a count who pretends to be a local peasant. He falls in love with Giselle even though he's already engaged. He's careless but he doesn't mean to be cruel. She finds out and dies of a broken heart. Act 2: He goes to visit her grave and meets the wilis, a group of ghost girls who all died of broken hearts and dance men to death in the night. Giselle dances with him to make it look like he's dancing even when he's exhausted. She saves him. It's quite beautiful :)
