When you press in the left rudder pedal in these crosswind conditions(in order to line up with rwy centerline), you have to correct it with your ailerons. These pilots didn`t do that, and then the left wingtip will go down and you`ll be blown to the left... So I agree it`s bad flown!

A steady wind and a gust are different.
But after looking at it again, I think you are right about the crabbing. I did make a joke about taking pictures from the port windows....I meant as a passenger.
That much should have been an automatic abort.

ok u sound like someone who knows a little about flying...maybe a private pilot or a student pilot..well i am a commercial pilot and im telling you it was stupid.. lufthansa praised them because they had to make the public think that it was normal because there was going to be a huge law suit. at this point in the approach the autopilot is de coupled, and yes it was a gust. however the crosswind was beyond what the plane could handle.

The pilots are not stupid and i am sure they would have been cleared to land, and they have the reference book onboard which shows all the max alowable crosswind speed for the auto pilot and vfr, so i don't think they would have gone for it without checking the refernce. Also if you watch it well, you will notice that the landing was going just like any other heavy crosswind landing, and it was a GUST, they did the right thing. also this was on the news, and lufthansa praised the pilots.

"To dummies who say the landing shouldn't have been attempted, crosswinds are INVISIBLE and UNPREDICTABLE, even on high wind days."
lets see here... when they clear an aircraft to land, tower says "cleared to land runway 20winds are 270 at 40 knots." this is an exact clearance that tower will give an aircraft..pilots are trained to fly, also they are trained to make good decisions and that was not a good decision. with that much crab angle coming to land, you would know there is cross wind
overtorque100 (July 19, 2008 at 9:53 pm)
ok my whole take on this incident is that they should have never tried to land knowing the conditions at the field...when i said that no skill was involved i meant that they made a bad decision. on every landing you must know when things arent just set up right and call your go around...either the captain or co-pilot. they conditions at the field exceeded their maximum crosswind limitation for that aircraft, therefore they made a bad decision.

the landing was fine, until as you say they hit the left ruder catching a gust under the wing. notice GUST, u cant predict them, if anything the pilots did a great job under a very tough condition recovering the plane, and no they did not land, and the wing did not hit the ground, if it i don't think the aircraft would have made the go around, and the pilots then would have been forced to land, as it would be safer to land a damaged aircraft on the grass then continue to fly it.

The pilot who saved those people was the female co pilot if I recall.

I don't think his wing hit the runway. Wings are a fuel tank and even at those speeds it could break off and cause an explosion, but it was a near miss.

Imagine being able to take pictures of the runway from the port windows while you are landing. Scary thought.
And great effort by the pilot. A medal should have been awarded. To dummies who say the landing shouldn't have been attempted, crosswinds are INVISIBLE and UNPREDICTABLE, even on high wind days.
Pilots are trained to handle them, but the great big wide open spaces that large airports occupy invite high winds. |
